A high-tech GPS device, the Furuno GP37 WAAS/DGPS navigator is designed particularly for use in
fishing boats, sail boats, pleasure craft, and coastal ships. Aside from marine navigation, it can be also used for
other purposes such as in cars and airplanes. Now, does the GP37 measure up against its competition? Read on to
find out.
Compact But Powerful
Don't be fooled by the compact size of the Furuno GP37 - despite its being small, it is actually big in terms of
performance and features. The GP37 comes equipped with a DGPS (differential GPS) receiver and a WAAS (Wide Area
Augmentation System) receiver, both of which are designed to improve the integrity and accuracy of the entire GPS.
This device, enclosed in a water-resistant case, also uses differential radio beacon correction methods.
The GP37 is a very powerful unit because its processor is capable of performing position fixing, augmentation,
and high-speed processing. The unit features precise position fixes: 3 meters for areas with available WAAS
service, 5 meters for areas with DGPS, and 10 meters for basic GPS.
Selecting DGPS Or WAAS
DGPS performs better than WAAS when it comes to accuracy and reliability because to date, the availability,
accuracy, and integrity of the latter are not certain yet. This explains why the default setting on the GP37 in
auto selection mode is DGPS. The setting is intended for enhanced accuracy regardless of what the GPS is used
for.
If the unit is in the default mode, it automatically functions using the WAAS mode when the DGPS signal is not
available for any reason. If WAAS is not available, the unit shifts instantly to basic GPS setting. You may opt to
set the unit to manual mode for optimized signal reception.
Your Display Options
This GPS navigation device is equipped with a 4.5-inch diagonal bright LCD screen. Various display modes are
available for the GP37: two Customizable displays, Highway, Plotter, Speedometer, and Plotter. The Customizable
displays give you an option to customize the layout of the display, making it easier for you to see your desired
navigation data when its display is magnified. Another interesting display mode is the Steering mode that offers an
intuitive view of the route to crosstrack-error and steer.
Huge Memory
The memory capacity of the GP37 is large enough to meet the rigorous demands of marine, air, or land navigation.
It has 50 routes made of as many as 30 waypoints, 999 marks or waypoints, and 1,000 points of vessel track. Also,
its retained memory has worldwide DGPS stations.
Standard Features
Loaded with numerous features, here are the other things that come standard with the Furuno GP37:
∗ TRIP odometer aside from the standard odometer.
∗ Can be used in multiple languages: English, Dutch, French, Japanese, German, Spanish, Italian, French,
Vietnamese, and Portuguese.
